Things took a strange turn for a newspaper carrier for the Kitsap Sun in Bremerton, Wash., early Tuesday when her van was stolen and the driver led police on a 14-mile chase.
A 38-year-old Kingston man was arrested after being chased by police through Poulsbo, Suquamish and Kingston, Wash., according to the Kitsap Sun.
The carrier had dropped off some papers, used the bathroom and bought a few things at a convenience store on Highway 104 at about 2:45 a.m. She had left her keys in the ignition, and when she came pout, the van was gone.
She contacted another carrier, who spotted the van and followed it until police arrived. According to the Sun, when police tried to pull the driver over, he refused, leading them on a 15-minute chase.
At least one bundle of newspapers flew out onto the road during the chase, and a pursuing deputy ran over it.
The man was arrested and booked into the Kitsap County jail on suspicion of eluding police, driving with a revoked license and theft of a motor vehicle. Bail was bail set at $50,000.
At least the story had a happy ending — the woman’s van was returned, and all the newspapers were delivered along her route.
