AP will introduce the series, called AP Sports Extra, with a page of stories, photos and graphics previewing the British Open, which gets under way this week. The British Open page will be distributed July 17 for use anytime this week.
AP is committed to publishing an annual schedule of these pages, each containing an open ad spot, so its member papers’ advertising teams can sell against them.
“At AP, we continue to look for ways to create added value for member papers carrying our sports report,” said James J. Reindl, director of AP Sports Products and Business Development for U.S. Newspapers. ‘‘AP Sports Extra is a creative and attractive package for member newspapers that saves time preparing previews of major events and offers a way to add incremental revenue through ad sales.’’
AP is collaborating with Postmedia Editorial Services, of Toronto, to produce Sports Extra. AP is supplying text, data and imagery to Postmedia, which will use the content to create the pages in a pdf format that AP will distribute.
Pages will come in a full- and half-page broadsheet format and tabloid format.
Besides the page on the British Open, the AP Sports Extra lineup will focus on the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship, AP Top 25 college football poll, the NASCAR race for the cup, Major League Baseball’s post-season, college football’s bowl preview, NFL playoff preview, the Masters tournament and the NFL draft.
