Hawaii’s two leading online news outlets have undergone plenty of changes recently, but they remain fiercely competitive when it comes to breaking news, building mobile traffic and wooing advertisers.

It’s been several years since a newspaper merger and a partnership among several TV stations left the Honolulu market with a pair of major digital players: StarAdvertiser.com which is operated by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, and HawaiiNewsNow.com, the digital face of a newsroom serving three TV stations.
