MADRID--Employee representatives at El Pais, Spain's best-selling newspaper and one of the most influential across the Spanish-speaking world, said Tuesday they are calling a strike with immediate effect, after the paper's parent company decided to lay off nearly a third of editorial staff and cut salaries for the rest.
