The Press has claimed a major award following its coverage of the Christchurch earthquakes at the prestigious Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers' Association (PANPA) Awards in Australia.


There was a standing ovation after The Press received the daily Newspaper of the Year award for circulation between 25,000-90,000 at the Sydney awards. Wellington's The Dominion Post was also a finalist in this category.


Newspaper of the Year went to Fairfax's Melbourne daily, The Age.
