The Boston Globe’s new subscription website racked up a measly 16,000 subscribers and, as parent New York Times Co. sheds non-core businesses, experts told the Herald yesterday they wouldn’t be surprised to see the Globe put up for sale.

“Sixteen thousand in three months is not impressive,” said Edward Atorino, an analyst at the Benchmark Co. “The Times, when they launched, there was a big rush, 100,000 or so, but then it slowed down a bit.”
