Gannett (GCI), which owns USA TODAY, on Tuesday reported a 53.6% rise in net income for the quarter ended March 31 on gains in political advertising in its broadcast division and digital subscription revenue.

Revenue rose 1.6% vs. the first quarter in 2012 to $1.2 billion. The year-over-year gains reflect increases of 8.7% in broadcasting to $191.6 million and 3.9% in digital to $174.9 million, the company said in an earnings report out before the market open.
