Profits for Journal Communications Inc. rose 23.9% in the second quarter as revenue in the company's broadcast division grew.

The Milwaukee-based media company posted net income of $7.61 million, or 13 cents a share, up from $6.14 million, or 10 cents, a year earlier.

"Journal Communications had a strong second quarter with operating earnings up 17%, driven by political and issue advertising and a continuing recovery in many of our local broadcast markets," Steven Smith, chairman and chief executive, said in a statement.
