The world of media was rocked this week when the Poynter Institute, one of the leading educational organizations for journalists, revealed that its principal source of income, the Tampa Bay Times, was no longer considered a viable source of funding. Ever since the death of the institute's founder, Nelson Poynter, the Times has bankrolled the school and, for that reason, the Times has enjoyed special treatment by the IRS. But a recent report on the front page of the Tampa Tribune paints a very bleak picture.

Not that the Tribune has a horse in this race

This is hardly an unbiased story. There has been the usual rivalry between the two papers, like Dallas vs. Ft. Worth. Lately its turned bitter as the Tribune has been slowly gutted, and the Times rebranded and moved with some success into the Tampa market (which the Tribune was only able to stop for five years).
Let's hope that the Tampa paper, freed of its Richmond yoke (and hub?) will get better. And that the Times figures out its business model, with or without Poynter.
