San Francisco's Mission District has long been an epicenter of hipness and a cultural lab for music and art, so where better to try a new experiment in hyperlocal journalism?

MissionLocal, a three-year-old site run by the journalism school at the University of California, Berkeley, isn't the first or only local news site to spring out of a university. But along with sister hyperlocals Richmond Confidential and Oakland North, it might be the only organization in the country to build a community news site out of a school project.
