Think hyperlocal news and you usually think small: small coverage area, small staff, small budget.

Occasionally, the mom-and-pop or one-man shop might spawn a vertical, but aside from one notable behemoth player in the space, moves toward scale have been few and far between.

And then The Alternative Press came along. The New Jersey-based hyperlocal site network, which now covers 15 towns in the state, also began as a mom-and-pop.
