Doug Nye, a former writer and editor for The State and the Columbia Record, both based in Columbia, S.C., died June 5  after a year-long battle with lung cancer. Nye retired in 2004 after serving as a sports writer, editor and television editor at both the Columbia Record and The State. He was 69.
