I wasn’t expecting the best advice I ever would receive as a journalist when I interviewed Sid Dorfman in 2005. The assignment was to write a story about his 70th anniversary at The Star-Ledger, which to this 30-something sports columnist seemed impossible.

To be clear: This was not his retirement announcement. Sid was 85 when we spoke that day, but he was still active, in the operation of his high school sports bureau and with his weekly column. Dorfman, who died Saturday at 94, started his career at what was then the Morning Ledger in 1935.
