A family friend confirmed that Tom Forstrom, longtime Statesman Journal columnist, died Wednesday morning of congestive heart failure. He was 69.

Forstrom retired in 2005 after serving Salem-area readers for more than 35 years, first with the Capital Journal and then with the Statesman Journal.
