When Gregory Lewis joined the Sun Sentinel (Fla.) 10 years ago as a reporter covering the African-American community, he introduced himself to the politicians, business people and civic leaders who make news in South Florida.

Then he visited the barber shops, stopped by the funeral parlors, lunched at the Elks Club, and walked Sistrunk Boulevard to get to know the people who live in the neighborhoods. And there he found his best material.

Good bye to a special friend

Greg helped me get my first job in journalism. The last time I saw him was about three years ago at a conference in South Florida. He was the same upbeat person then as he was when I first met him in Washington, D.C.
I just googled his name to see what he was up to and found his obit. What a bummer. My heart goes out to his family.
