South African editor Cherilyn Ireton is the first woman to head the organization, which was created in 1994 as a unique global network for exchanging ideas on newsroom management, editorial quality, online strategies and press freedom issues.
Mary Junck is currently chairman and CEO of Lee Enterprises, Inc. She joined the AP board in 2004 and was named vice chairman of the board in 2008.
Editor-in-chief John Stackhouse said the reorganization is designed to help build new editorial products and services, help The Globe grow as a multimedia and interactive news organization, increase creativity and learning in The Globe’s newsroom, increase transparency and accessibility to the public, and continue leading the country in news.
The appointments include Dave Hunke as publisher, Michael O’Brien as executive vice president/general manager, and Heather Frank as editor-in-chief.
Winners will be announced Feb. 10 in a press conference at the Amsterdam City Hall and on the foundation’s website.
Tom Curley has been in his position since 2003. He helped AP’s move into the digital space, advocated for open government, expanded into North Korea and Pakistan, and reorganized AP’s business infrastructure.
The Florida paper has named Ron Belyea as advertising manager and promoted Pattie Zarfos to digital sales supervisor.
Raju Narisetti most recently served as managing editor for The Washington Post.
Carolina Garcia has also been appointed executive editor at the Daily Breeze, based in Torrance, Calif.
Eric T. John will manage the development of ABCi’s products and services and oversee day-to-day operations.
Mark Stencel is managing editor for digital news at National Public Radio and Mary Stapp is a journalist and former high school journalism adviser.
Sylvia Stead will address issues of journalistic integrity, investigate complaints, respond to readers, work with industry groups and manage legal concerns.
Craig Roth will develop strategies and identify new areas of opportunity for MEI, and also focus on helping clients leverage technology to meet new challenges in digital publishing.
