United Communications Corp. has named Lucy Brown Minn president. She assumes the position from Elizabeth K. Brown, wife of the late Howard J. Brown. Brown will retain her position as chairman of the UCC board. UCC owns and operates print, broadcast and digital enterprises in New York, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota and South Dakota.

“Lucy will provide the next-generation link to the family business,” Brown said. “She brings solid business background, practical media experience and an eagerness to address changing needs in information services. She looks forward to assisting and supporting our management team.”

Brown Minn, 51, holds a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and has worked extensively in radio and television. Since 1994, she has been CEO of Lupe Development Partners, a Twin Cities /real estate development business specializing in affordable housing and urban renewal. She will retain that position, but reduce her day-to-day commitments.

UCC is privately held by the Brown family. The corporate offices are in Kenosha, Wis., where Howard J. Brown bought his first newspaper, the Kenosha News. Brown died April 29, 2011.

Brown Minn will work in the office part-time in both Kenosha and Minneapolis. Other corporate officers are vice presidents Kenneth L. Dowdell and Ronald J. Montemurro. They also hold operating positions with the Kenosha News—Dowdell as publisher and Montemurro as general manager.

Members of the Brown family have served for 15 years on the UCC board of directors. Besides Elizabeth Brown, the board consists of Brown Minn and husband Steve; sisters Sally Brown Russ and husband, Mark; Amy Brown Tuchler and husband, Jim. Dowdell and Montemurro also serve on the board.

UCC operating divisions include the Kenosha News, which also publishes the Zion-Benton News/Bargaineer and She and Prime magazines; Attleboro (Mass.) Sun Chronicle, which includes the weekly Foxboro Reporter; KEYC-TV (CBS) and NEYC-TV (Fox), Mankato, Minn.; WWNY-TV (CBS) and WNYF-TV (Fox), Watertown, N.Y., Lake Geneva (Wis.) Regional News and Resorter; and Watertown (S.D.) Public Opinion and Couteau Shopper.
