There’s a certain staying power to college towns, especially the storied ones like Ithaca, N.Y. Home to Cornell University and Ithaca College, its residents can rely on the educational bedrock at the city’s center, not to mention a steady stream of interesting and eclectic news coming out of its colleges.


The Ithaca Independent
saw the possibilities there, launching in 2010 online with initial plans to expand into print. But as founder and publisher Ed Sutherland saw newspaper circulations dropping all around him, he soon decided that staying online would be the better move.
