Larry Riley, vice president of circulation for Freedom Communications’ flagship Orange County Register and publisher of the Register’s weekly Spanish language newspaper Excelsior, has been named publisher of the Freedom-owned Appeal-Democrat in Marysville, Calif. He also will oversee Freedom’s Tri-County Newspapers operations in Colusa, Glenn and Tehama counties.
A 28-year newspaper veteran, Riley began his career at the Union-Tribune in his native San Diego, Calif. and later held circulation management positions at the Los Angeles Times, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune in Florida and the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press before coming to the Register as vice president of circulation in 2004. He added publishing responsibilities for Excelsior in 2009 and also oversees the Newspapers in Education program.
Riley replaces Dave Schmall, publisher since 2008, who resigned to explore new opportunities.
Riley is active professionally in the California Newspaper Publishers Association and the Newspaper Association of America.
