The University of South Florida has named Gil Thelen, a journalism professor and former publisher of The Tampa Tribune, as interim director of the School of Mass Communications.

Thelen, 74, has been on the USF faculty since 2007 as the Clendinen Professor of Critical Writing. He teaches opinion writing and public affairs reporting.

He replaces Fred Pearce, who resigned as director but will continue on the faculty as a full professor.
