Progress Press has made the move into heatset printing and in so doing extended its production spectrum. Ferag’s XtraWin concept gives the company the flexibility and competitiveness it needs to become established in the marketplace.
Over the last five years, Progress Press has achieved a sixfold increase in its turnover, and in 2010 achieved a revenue of Euro 12 million with 100 employees. Founded in 1922, Progress Press is today part of the Allied Group, which also owns the publisher of the Times of Malta. To expand further, the management team acquired a building complex with a 10,000 m2 production area in Mriehel in mid 2009. Including technology, a total of Euro 30 million has been invested in the project.
The new facility means that Progress Press has also moved into the commercial product market. As Managing Director Adrian Hillman can confirm, this step has allowed Progress Press to acquire a large share of local commercial offset products for itself, and is set to hold its own in the international market, too. At centre stage in the mailroom is an MSD-2C inserting drum from Ferag, which copes with the growing supplement volume on this Mediterranean island in conjunction with the RollStream precollecting system, which is equipped with six hoppers.
For the production of commercial jobs, Ferag was able to bring Progress Press onside with its tried-and-tested XtraWin concept and expand the functionality of the mailroom so that print products can be stitched and given a three-side trim inline. These tasks are handled by the StreamStitch stitching system and the SNT-U trimming drum. Both can be configured with great flexibility within the mailroom system, and thus enable rapid job changes. Managing Director Noel Galea stresses that with the XtraWin concept Ferag has been able to meet the company’s current expectations in the best possible way and that it now has the flexibility it needs to grow with future demands.
