The world of media was rocked this week when the
Poynter Institute, one of the leading educational organizations for journalists, revealed that its principal source of income, the
Tampa Bay Times, was no longer considered a viable source of funding. Ever since the death of the institute's founder, Nelson Poynter, the Times has bankrolled the school and, for that reason, the Times has enjoyed special treatment by the IRS. But a recent report on the front page of the
Tampa Tribune paints a very bleak picture.
