BOSTON (Dec. 17, 2012) - The Boston Globe and CBS Boston’s WBZ-TV today announced a collaboration that combines the power of two news organizations with a long tradition of excellence covering Greater Boston and New England.
Beginning today, The Globe and WBZ-TV will showcase exclusive, breaking news, and video on television, in print, and on the web.
“This collaboration will further allow The Boston Globe and WBZ-TV News to deliver the most comprehensive news and information across platforms to better serve consumers when, where, and how they want content,” said Mark Lund, President and General Manager of CBS Boston’s WBZ-TV and myTV38 (WSBK-TV).
“We’re excited to join forces with WBZ-TV, and to tap the power of our combined resources and knowledge,” Caleb Solomon, the Globe’s managing editor, said. “The relationship with WBZ-TV is one more way for the Globe to extend its reach in Greater Boston, with a news organization that values quality journalism,” Solomon said.
The collaboration between the Globe and WBZ-TV will incorporate the Globe’s Emmy Award-winning videos with WBZ-TV’s legacy of award-winning reporting and photojournalism, additional interviews and analysis by Globe reporters on the scene and in the newsroom, and early access to Globe polls. WBZ-TV will also preview breaking news and other exclusive stories that will appear in the next day’s Globe, including projects by the Globe’s Spotlight investigative team.
The Globe and WBZ-TV News have both earned numerous, prestigious awards for journalism excellence. In the past year alone, the Globe won nine regional Edward R. Murrow Awards and six national awards for video investigative reporting, use of video, the website, and writing. Video awards cited coverage of the capture and return of James “Whitey” Bulger, investigative video reporting on the high number of DUI acquittals by Massachusetts judges, and a feature video on the sounds of the Deer Island sewage treatment plant. WBZ-TV News won six awards from The Massachusetts Broadcasters’ Association, including the highest honor of Station of the Year.
In June 2012, the Globe and WBZ-TV News each won seven National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Boston/New England Emmy Awards. The Globe took top honors for visual and multimedia storytelling, including awards for outstanding documentary and outstanding arts/entertainment coverage, and outstanding feature coverage. Among its many awards, WBZ-TV News won for outstanding reporting, investigations, writing, and team coverage.
Also starting today, WBZ-TV’s team of AccuWeather meteorologists will have video forecasts on the home page of Boston.com, with updates five times each day.
“Running WBZ’s AccuWeather forecasts with the station’s top-flight meteorologists on Boston.com will be a tremendous benefit for our audience,” Solomon said.
