U.S. Presidential Debate Underscored Rise of Fact-checking Tools

As the Oct. 3 debate between President Barack Obama and Republican
challenger Mitt Romney showed, journalists in the U.S. are increasingly using
fact-checking websites as another way to inform and engage the public.
Websites such as
FactCheck.org
monitor and analyze candidates’ statements or political ads for
accuracy and truthfulness. The sites often use graphics along with their
findings to visually demonstrate if a candidates' statements are
misleading.
