A visit to the Detroit Free Press last week by a handful Gannett corporate executives prompted the latest round of existential newspaper angst within the walls at 615 West Lafayette Boulevard.

The newspaper is closing! It's being sold! It's being merged with The Detroit News!

I go through this every six months. Sometimes more often. Some event or happening prompts a flurry of speculation that one or both of the newspapers is about to close or be sold, or something.
