NETWORK SOLUTIONS TO RELEASE DOT COM DIRECTORY

Network Solutions is expected to release its Dot Com Directory service today, according to a report in The New York Times.
The new directory offers listings from Network Solution's database of registered domain names ending in ".com." Last month, Network Solutions announced the directory would be available for free to NSI domain registration customers.
Controversy has surrounded the release of the Dot Com Directory since it uses a database which Network Solutions claims intellectual-property rights to, while the U.S. Commerce Department says the information is public property.
On Capitol Hill last week, a battle ensued between Network Solutions and the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the oversight body picked by the Commerce Department last year to handle global competition for domain registrations. A resolution is still pending.
Network Solutions is also under investigation by the Justice Department's antitrust division.
