'RiseUp' Files for Bankruptcy

Published: June 12, 2009 12:59 PM ET

KANSAS CITY, Mo. The publishers of RiseUp, a short-lived newspaper insert dealing with race and ethnicity, have filed for bankruptcy.

RiseUp Publications LLC and its parent company, Ellis Management Marketing Group Inc., filed separate Chapter 7 bankruptcy petitions Wednesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court of the Western District of Missouri.

The Kansas City-based Ellis group created the magazine last year as an insert for major national newspapers. It appeared for only six weeks, reaching 4 million readers at its peak.

An attorney for Janice Ellis, 1 of RiseUp's principals, said the magazine ran into the same financial trouble affecting other newspapers.

The bankruptcy petitions estimated unsecured creditors will likely receive little or nothing.
