'Press-Enterprise' Layoffs Don't Signal More A.H. Belo Cuts, Says CFO

CHICAGO Last week's layoffs at The Press-Enterprise in Riverside, Calif., isn't the start of a new round of job cuts at other A.H. Belo papers, the Dallas-based company's CFO said Wednesday.

Senior Vice President/CFO Alison K. Engel told the Providence (R.I.) Business News in an article on its Web site that the layoffs were "specifically related" to local economic conditions in Riverside, which she characterized as "one of our hardest-hit markets."

The Press-Enterprise laid off between 40 and 45 employees, including 16 in the newsroom, the newspaper reported Monday.

Engel said she was not aware of any layoffs planned at A.H. Belo's other dallies, The Dallas Morning News, Providence Journal or Denton (Texas) Record-Chronicle. But in this newspaper economy further cuts are possible anywhere, she indicated.

"You're kind of in a continuous state of restructuring," Engel added.
