Global Sports Newspaper Association in Marketing Push

By E&P Staff

Published: October 23, 2009 12:04 PM ET

CHICAGO A year after its founding, the International Association of Sports Newspapers (IASN) on Friday launched a new Web site to call attention to it efforts to promote sports-oriented newspapers as marketing tools.

The site, www.press-iasn.org, is intended to reach sponsors, media executives and the audience for the sports press, IASN said.

The founding board members of IASN include La Gazzetta dello Sport in Italy; the Spanish papers El Mundo Deportivo and Marca; L'Equipe in France; Ole in Argentina; and Lance! in Brazil.

IASN said it is dedicated to safeguarding the ethical and economic interests of sports newspapers; promoting the papers as marketing tools for sports brands; fighting racism and xenophobia in sports; promoting sports and reading among children; and promoting "the use of sport as a tool in development policies."

Paris-based IASN is the sports arm of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), an association of newspapers and publishers representing more than 18,000 publications in more than 120 countries.
