'Ledger-Enquirer' Sportswriter Rutledge Dies at 52

Published: June 05, 2009 11:26 AM ET

COLUMBUS, Ga. A sportswriter for the Ledger-Enquirer, Jerry Rutledge, has died after being taken to a Columbus hospital with blood clots in his lungs. He was 52 when he died Thursday evening.

Rutledge had worked in a variety of jobs on the Ledger-Enquirer after joining the paper in the mid-1990s, but sports editor Kevin Price said he returned to his first love -- sports writing. He covered high school sports for the newspaper.

He was sports editor of the campus newspaper at Jacksonville State University before joining the Anniston Star in the early 1980s.

Rutledge is survived by his wife, Carolyn Rutledge; his father, Osburn Rutledge Sr.; three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral arrangements will be announced Friday.
