NEW YORK Kevin Jones has been elected president of Missouri Press Association. The annopuncement was made during the 143rd annual Missouri Press Association's convention in Kansas City last month.

Jones, the senior vice president and chief operating officer of the St. Louis American, previously held the position of first vice president of MPA, which was founded in 1867 and is comprised of more than 290 newspapers. He will be replacing Vicki Russell, associate publisher of the Columbia Daily Tribune, effective Jan. 1, 2010.

Jones, an honor graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia’s School of Journalism, is a 24-year veteran of the newspaper industry. He previously served as president of the Missouri Advertising Managers’ Association and is a member of the Press Club of Metropolitan St. Louis, as well as a board member for the Advertising Club of St. Louis.

Jones has been honored with more than two dozen regional and national awards over the course of his career, including the Missouri Advertising Managers’ Association’s Old Pro Award, and he was named the top newspaper Advertising Director of the Year in North America by Suburban Newspapers of America.

Jones is only the third MPA president from a St. Louis-area newspaper. David Lipman from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch was president in 1997, and in 1968 the St. Louis Daily Record’s Lucius B. Morse held the position.

“To be able to serve as president of this association, and have my photo in the halls of my alma matter’s (Mizzou’s) journalism school’s hall, with such prestigious previous presidents, is more than a dream come true,” Jones said in a statement.
