TownNews.com to Use AP Microformat hNews

By E&P Staff

Published: October 20, 2009 10:51 AM ET

NEW YORK TownNews.com is incorporating the Associated Press' new format templates hNews in its new BLOX Web content management system. The AP and Media Standards Trust, a British nonprofit, developed the microformat earlier this year to help the new industry adopt consistent news formats for online content.

Todd Martin, vice president of technology and director of the AP news registry, said in a statement: "HNews provides a consistent and higher fidelity way of presenting news online and enables the semantic interpretation of news for humans and machines. It also enables news publishers to add enriched metadata -- or tags -- to their content to improve the user experience, attract audiences and advertisers, and facilitate searching for specific types of content."

TownNews.com, the majority of which is owned by Lee Enterprises, helps more than 1,500 newspapers, including AP members, publish online editions and will offer hNews.

"We are pleased to work with the Associated Press to help newspapers move to the next level of content publishing," Marc Wilson, TownNews.com's general manager, said in a statement.
