CHICAGO Journal Register Co. announced Monday that Daniel M. Sarko has been named to the newly created position of chief digital officer.

Sarko joins the Yardley, Pa.-based community newspaper publisher from Philadelphia Media Holdings, where he was vice president and interim general manager/interactive for the Philly.com division.

Journal Register said Sarko will be responsible for expanding and developing its hyperlocal digital strategy.

"We have invested a considerable amount of time recruiting for this critical position to find the right executive to help the company capitalize on the tremendous opportunity to transform our unique and proprietary hyper-local content to digital media platforms," Journal Register interim CEO Robert Conway said in a statement. "Dan's background in the newspaper industry and his strong digital media experience makes him ideally qualified to lead this transformation."
