NEW YORK The Chicago Tribune is adding weekly sports cartoons to its newly redesigned "Chicago Sports" section starting this weekend. The cartoons will be drawn by former Rocky Mountain News sports cartoonist Drew Litton, and the first, titled "The Main Event," will appear in Saturday's edition.

“I really think local sports cartoons connect with readers in an amazing way,” Litton said in a Q&A with Rob Tornoe, a cartoonist for the Press of Atlantic City and Cagle.com, and a blogger about the cartoon industry.

Litton, who has been drawing sports cartoons for 25 years, said that the cartoon will focus on Chicago-area teams, including those from local colleges like the University of Illinois, Northwestern University and the University of Notre Dame. The cartoons are slated to appear in each Saturday issue of the Tribune, as well as on its Web site.

Litton is excited about starting his work at the Tribune, and not just because “Chicago is a fantastic sports town.”

“Mascots are very important to a sports cartoonist,” he tells Tornoe. “You know Da Bears, Cubs, Bulls, Blackhawks. Those are like the greatest mascots of all time. Good manly type mascots.”

The hiring of Litton comes after the Tribune brought Scott Stantis on board as its first editorial cartoonist in nine years. However, Litton says there are marked differences between the two.

“Scott Stantis is the Tribune’s staff Editorial Cartoonist who is going to win billions of Pulitzers,” he tells Tornoe. “Right now I’m a freelance cartoonist doing one cartoon a week and hopefully more down the road. But I think hiring Scott Stantis was terrific and sends a message to other publishers that cartoonists sell papers. I’m hoping I can sell a few for them.”
