Kodak Versamark Prints U.K. Papers for Miller on Malta

NEW YORK Miller Newsprint Ltd., based on the island of Malta, is using a Kodak Versamark VL4200 to print such European newspapers as The Financial Times, Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, Sunday Mirror, The People, Daily Star, Daily Express, The Daily Mirror and The Daily and Sunday Telegraph for tourists and residents of the Maltese Islands.

With the investment, sales volume has risen 50% at Miller Newsprint, part of the Miller Malta Group and a major shareholder in London-based Newsfax International, Britain's largest independent newspaper contract printer.

"The Kodak technology means we can supply newspapers around the clock to more than 1,000 outlets across the Maltese Islands," Miller Newsprint CEO Malcolm Miller said in a statement. "With the Kodak system, we have the capacity to increase the number of titles available.... We can print tomorrow's newspaper and have it ready for distribution before dawn." The papers previously had been air-freighted.

Miller Malta Group has retail operations across Malta, with five outlets at Malta International Airport, in addition to strategically located bookstores, kiosks and convenience stores. It also hand delivers papers to hotels, offices, and homes.

"Miller Newsprint is the latest example of how the capabilities of the Kodak Versamark VL-Series Systems help printers capitalize on emerging market trends and open new revenue opportunities, at a low total cost of ownership," said Kevin Joyce, Worldwide Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Digital Printing Solutions, Kodak.

The Versamark VL4200 printing system operates at 410 fpm at a resolution of 600x360 dpi and comes with a range of productivity features, such as continuous ink replenishment during production.

Calling its quality perfect from first to last copies, Miller said adopting a similar printing strategy with the technology is under consideration at as many as six other European locations.
