NEW YORK Thanks to a $1 million gift from The Harnisch Family Philanthropies, New York's Baruch College has launched the Studio H journalism laboratory -- designed to bring the latest technology to the classroom and train students in the most advanced techniques of gathering and disseminating news.

The gift helps "transform what was a program within the English Department just a year ago into one of the nation's premier undergraduate journalism departments," Geanne Rosenberg, journalism professor and chair of the Department of Journalism and the Writing Professions, said in announcing the lab.

Studio H includes 24 computer-equipped workstations with sophisticated editing software, video and digital cameras, and sound-recording equipment. The facility also has high-quality multimedia presentation capabilities.

The addition of a studio component to the department's resources adds to the ability to serve a diverse population of students in what is the city's only public undergraduate journalism program.

"This professional-quality facility offers Baruch College a world-class resource for preparing tomorrow's practitioners and leaders in the fields of journalism, new media, and all of the writing professions," Baruch College President Stan Altman said in a statement. "It immediately helps to position our new journalism department in the forefront of professional writing programs."
