Editor and Publisher Eppy Awards - Best New Media Services
CHICAGO TRIB, WASH POST WIN BIG IN EPpy AWARDS
Online Honors Handed Out Last Night

NEW ORLEANS - The Internet services of the Chicago Tribune and The Washington Post captured three categories each to lead the field in the Fifth Annual EPpy Awards competition for interactive newspapers. The awards were presented last night at the Editor & Publisher 11th Annual Interactive Newspapers Conference and Trade Show in New Orleans.

The EPpy for Outstanding Individual Achievement was awarded to Steve Outing, the new-media writer and columnist. (Editor's note: Outing writes a weekly column for E&P Online, but is not an employee of E&P. An independent panel of judges chooses the outstanding individual award.)

The EPpy Awards are presented each year to the best of class in newspaper-sponsored and news-oriented Internet services worldwide. Nearly 400 entries were submitted in the 2000 EPpy Awards competition.

Chicagotribune.com won its awards for the Best U.S. Newspaper Online Service (Circulation Over 100,000), Best Promotion of a Newspaper Online Service, and Best Classified Section in a Newspaper Online Service.

Washingtonpost.com was honored for the Best News Section, Best Shopping Application, and Best Use of Interactivity in a Newspaper Online Service.

A three-year streak by Cnet as the Best Non-Newspaper Online News Service was broken by MSNBC.

The Internet service of the Financial Times of London, ft.com, won honors for the Best Non-U.S. Newspaper Online Service and the Best Business Section in a Newspaper Online Service. That site was scheduled to re-launch this weekend.

Both chicagotribune.com and washingtonpost.com enjoyed repeat wins in 2000 - and they were not alone. Chicagotribune.com won in the Best Promotion category for the second year in a row, and washingtonpost.com repeated in the Best News category.

The other repeat winner in the 2000 EPpy Awards was Brigham Young University for Best College Newspaper Online Service.

Outing was honored for nearly a decade of work as a leading thinker and writer about the newspaper industry's opportunities in new media.

Twenty-four judges, all industry experts, evaluated the nearly 400 entries in 18 categories to determine the winners of the 2000 EPpy Awards. The judging occurred during the final two months of 1999. All judging occurred online.

The EPpy Awards are managed by Len Muscarella, managing director of Parsippany, N.J.-based Interactive Media Associates Inc., a Web planning and marketing firm.
