EPpy™ Judge List

New York, NY (January 18, 1999) — The Washington Post Company's online service, washingtonpost.com, has placed a record seven entries among the finalists in the 1999 EPpy™ Awards Competition. EPpy™ winners will be announced at the Interactive Newspaper Conference in Atlanta on Feb 19.

Washingtonpost.com was named a finalist by the EPpy™ judges in the competition for Best Overall U.S. Newspaper Online Service, circulation greater than 100,000; Best News Section in a Newspaper Online Service; Best Business Section; Best Entertainment Section; Best Special Section; Best Classified Section; and Best Design in a Newspaper Online Service.

The EPpy™ Awards identify and honor the best work by the newspaper industry in the online/Internet field. Editor & Publisher Interactive, the new media division of Editor & Publisher Company, sponsors the awards.

"We believe this is the strongest group of finalists in the history of the EPpy™ Awards," said Colin Phillips, Publisher of Editor & Publisher.

"The improvement in the quality of the entries each year is a testament to the newspaper industry's focus on the Internet."

The awards program is the most prestigious in the industry, and has been a high point of the Interactive Newspaper Conference since 1996. The awards were named The EPpy™ Awards last year, when the categories were expanded and the program upgraded. The 1999 EPpy™ Awards will be presented at a gala dinner event at the Hyatt Regency, Atlanta on the last night of the conference.

The New York Times placed five entries among the finalists, including the category of Best U.S. Newspaper Online Service, circulation greater than 100,000. Its New York Today service is a finalist in the categories of Best Shopping Application and Best Entertainment Section.

Cnet‘s news.com is again a finalist in the Best non-Newspaper Online News Service category, joined by MSNBC and Wired News. Cnet won the EPpy™ in this category in 1998.

In a new award, for the Best College Newspaper Online Service, Brigham Young University, the University of Kentucky and Michigan State University are the finalists.
