Newspaper Stops Publishing DWI Conviction Photographs

Published: August 11, 2006 10:15 AM ET

LAWRENCEBURG, Ky. A small weekly newspaper in central Kentucky says it will no longer publish photos of convicted drunken drivers.

The Anderson News had published the photos since 1998. Former publisher Don White said he felt it was a way to deter crime.

General Manager Ben Carlson explained the decision in a column in this week’s edition. He says it’s not the newspaper’s job to punish or embarrass people. He also says he didn’t think publishing the mug shots served as a deterrent.
