PHILADELPHIA Members of the union for newsroom, advertising and clerical employees of Philadelphia's two largest newspapers have voted to defer a $25-a-week raise they were scheduled to receive Monday.

The cost-cutting move was requested by Philadelphia Media Holdings LLC, owner of The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News.

The vote Tuesday night by members of Newspaper Guild of Greater Philadelphia Local 10 was 197-79 to postpone the raises.

The local is the largest union at the newspapers. The second largest, Teamsters Local 628, and the Mailers union have also accepted the company's request. The Pressmen's Union has rejected it.

Guild administrative officer Bill Ross says he's pleased because guild members want to see the company thrive. He says the raise will stay on the table for future negotiations.
