'Dayton Daily News' to Make Newsroom Cuts

Published: October 20, 2008

DAYTON, Ohio The Dayton Daily News plans to eliminate about eight newsroom positions by the end of the year because of challenging business conditions.

Editor Kevin Riley said Monday that the move is part of the newspaper's efforts to be responsive to a changing market.

Newspapers around the country have been laying off workers this year, citing the slumping economy and falling advertising revenue. In 2006, 65 Daily News employees accepted early retirement.

Most of the jobs being cut have not been identified. About 175 employees work in the newsroom.

Cox Ohio Publishing publishes the newspaper, which has a daily circulation of about 115,000 and 158,000 on Sunday.
