Ohio Supreme Court Rules for 'The Blade' in E-mails Case

Published: December 09, 2008 11:12 AM ET

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio Supreme Court says a northern Ohio county must give a newspaper e-mails that discuss plans to replace a 120-year-old courthouse in Tiffin.

The Blade in Toledo had accused the Seneca County commissioners of withholding public records about the courthouse that some residents want to save.

The commissioners say the e-mails had been deleted from their computers.

The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that the commissioners must make reasonable efforts to retrieve the e-mails and give them to the newspaper.

The court declined to order the commissioners to promptly comply with all similar records requests in the future and pay the newspaper’s attorney fees.

Seneca County officials want to tear down the courthouse but are now reviewing a proposal that would allow the building to be renovated.
