'Buffalo News' Offers Buyouts to Hundreds of Employees

Published: January 08, 2009 3:23 PM ET

BUFFALO, N.Y. The Buffalo News is offering buyouts to about 300 employees in the newsroom and other departments because of tough economic times.

This is the second recent round of buyouts at the Berkshire Hathaway Inc.-owned daily, but the first to include editorial employees. The Buffalo News has about 820 employees.

Spokeswoman Dottie Gallagher-Cohen says about a dozen of the 110 circulation, customer service and production workers approached last fall accepted the offer.

Employees would receive at least $60,000, depending on years of service and salary level.

Employees have until Feb. 27 to accept the offer and would be off the payroll by the end of March.

Berkshire Hathaway is the Omaha, Neb.-based investment vehicle of Warren Buffett.
