Columbus 'Ledger-Enquirer' Cuts Jobs for Third Time in Less Than a Year

Published: March 18, 2009 9:57 AM ET

COLUMBUS, Ga. The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer says it is eliminating 20 positions, the third time in less than a year the newspaper has cut its work force.

Publisher Valerie Canepa said Tuesday the newspaper will eliminate 20 positions, 13 of which are open and won't be filled. She says there will be seven layoffs.

The cuts are part of restructuring by parent company, McClatchy Co., which announced earlier this month it is slashing its work force by 1,600, or 15%.

Canepa says some of it finance and accounting tasks will be moved to The Telegraph in Macon to create a regional finance center.

The Macon newspaper, also in the McClatchy group, announced last week it was eliminating 18 jobs and cut wages of many remaining employees by 2.5% to 10%.
