New Spanish-Language Daily Coming to NYC

Published: April 14, 2009 5:00 PM ET

NEW YORK A new Spanish-language daily called N.Y. Al Dia is coming to New York and its suburbs.

It's one of the few new publications to emerge as the industry shrinks overall.

The daily is expected to be available Monday through Friday beginning next week. It will have an initial circulation of 20,000.

Former reporters and editors of the New York edition of Hoy have come up with the idea after that newspaper ceased print publication in December 2008.

Hoy veteran and N.Y. Al Dia Editor Vicglamar Torres says that the group isn't trying to revive Hoy or to replace any existing newspaper. Instead, she calls it an "alternative."

The only other major Spanish-language newspaper in the region is El Diario/La Prensa.
