Louisiana Daily Plans Layoffs in Every Department

BATON ROUGE, La. The Advocate newspaper of Baton Rouge says it plans to lay off 49 employees.
Publisher David Manship says the national recession forced the cost-cutting move. He says the cuts will involve every department of the newspaper and involve full-time and part-time employees.
Manship says those facing layoffs will be notified Thursday. He says The Advocate is one of the few major U.S. newspapers that have avoided layoffs to this stage.
Other Louisiana newspapers, including the five owned by Gannett Co., have reduced their staffs since 2008.
