BOSTON Unions that represent mailers and printers at The Boston Globe have agreed to concessions with the newspaper's parent company, The New York Times Co., they hope will keep the 137-year-old newspaper publishing.

The Boston Mailers Union, Teamsters Local 1, voted 107-95 Tuesday to approve $5 million in cuts. President Mary White says she was surprised at how close the vote was.

The Boston Printing Pressman's Union, Teamsters Local 3, voted to accept $2.2 million in concessions in what was described as an angry meeting. President Martin Callaghan did not reveal the vote totals.

Unions that represents editorial staff and drivers vote on concessions next month.

The Times Co. has threatened to shut down the Globe unless unions agreed to $20 million in cuts.
