EXCLUSVE: Average Time Spent At Top 30 Newspaper Sites

By Jennifer Saba

Published: September 25, 2009 10:53 AM ET

NEW YORK Congratulations, Star Tribune of Minneapolis -- more time was spent per person on your site in the month of August than any other newspaper site in the top 30. According to Nielsen Online, visitors to StarTribune.com spent an average 20 minutes and 47 seconds during that month.

Nielsen defines time spent per person as the average over the course of the month.

Within the top five newspaper Web sites, more people lingered at the Wall Street Journal Online at 14 minutes during August.

The data should be viewed with caution, Nielsen emphasized. As of June 2009, the measurement firm vastly expanded its panel -- making it eight times larger. As a result, Nielsen warns that year-over-year trending could be affected for some sites and that the below information only should be used directionally.

Below is the average time spent per person in August 2009 compared to August 2008, ranked by August unique visitors.
