Formal Internal Charges Filed Against Boston Newspaper Guild President

NEW YORK Formal internal charges were filed Monday against Boston Newspaper Guild President Daniel Totten, who stands accused of misappropriating money or property, violating the union constitution, and disobeying orders, the Globe reported on Boston.com.

The charges against Totten were filed by union treasurer Patrice Sneyd. The guild leader is accused of recently signing the name of another union officer to his paycheck (which required a countersignature, according to members with knowledge of the matter), according to Boston Globe reporter Robert Gavin.

The charges will be presented Tuesday night to the union's governing board. If its members determine the charges conform to the constitution, the guild will begin a process that could include a trial, heard by a jury of seven selected by lottery from the general membership.

Totten has served as president of the guild -- which represents more than 600 editorial, advertising and business office workers -- since 2005. Recently, a group of members launched a petition to recall him and other union leaders.
