EXCLUSIVE: Top 30 Newspaper Sites for September! Our 'Unique' Chart

By Jennifer Saba

Published: October 21, 2009 10:05 AM ET

NEW YORK NYTimes.com heads back into positive growth rate territory up 7% year-over-year to 21.5 million uniques in September, according to Nielsen Online.

WSJ.com overtook its peers in the top five, the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post and USA Today, by jostling to the No. 2 position with 10.4 million uniques.

Below is the custom list of top 30 newspaper Web site for September with year-over-year comparisons, ranked by uniques. Please note that several factors including news events can cause swings in traffic. September 2008, for example, marked the beginning of the financial meltdown and hotly contested elections across the country.

The below data should be viewed with some caution, Nielsen emphasized. As of June 2009, the measurement firm vastly expanded its panel -- making it eight times larger. As a result, Nielsen warns that year-over-year trending could be affected for some sites and that the below information only should be used directionally.
